Enhancing nuclear medicine safety and efficiency through optimized PET/CT installation and radiation protection design

Project overview

Developed a radiation-protection and workflow plan for the installation of a PET/CT system at Hospital Universitario Fundación Alcorcón. The project addressed the safe integration of PET and SPECT services by combining shielding design, risk-area classification and separated patient pathways.

Approach

Defined controlled, supervised and contamination-risk areas according to expected exposure levels and access requirements. Designed separate PET and SPECT flows to prevent unnecessary interaction between injected patients and the general hospital population, and applied time, distance, shielding and ALARA principles to the department layout. Lead-shielding requirements were assessed using transmission factors, occupation factors and half-value-layer calculations.

Outcome

Delivered a proposed nuclear-medicine department layout with structured zoning, dedicated patient routes and appropriate shielding considerations. The design provided a framework for reducing occupational and public exposure while supporting a more efficient diagnostic workflow for PET/CT and SPECT examinations.
